The power of focusing

Hello!

It's been some months since I had started this blog, but still don't know exactly what to post. So I guess the best way to keep some activity and figure out for what I'll use this blog is start posting, even not knowing what. Exact the same way we do for overcoming the 'fear of blank page' a 'creative block' and those kind of things.

Let's start talking about myself, and how just one thing made the whole difference to me: focus. By focus I don't mean focusing on training and concetration, because it's something you obviously do if you like drawing, but the focus you have by aiming at something and making everything thinking on that goal.

So I was a teenager who since his early childhood was always playing with paper, pencils, empty packages, glue and tape (actually, it took some time for me to understand why when I've asked to buy things like paper my parents and aunties always bought, while the other children had to wait until their parents bought the toys they wished), and about 10 years old commented to his mother (who is an architect) that it there was something strange at the cube we learn drawing at school because things become smaller the farther they are from our sight (and yes, she replied that it is perspective, but told that it wasn't time to learn that). Naturally, all that led me to decide to start studying drawing when I was 13 years old.

In my early childhood I had watched Toei Superheroes (Super Sentai, Kamen Rider and Metal Heroes), then later become very interested in comics after reading Asterix, played RPG with my friends, saw the era of the 16-bit consoles, Jim Lee's X-Men and MTG cards, and then was living at the boom of anime and manga. All that led me to one choice: I wanted to become a comic artist.

And then, under a pressure for choosing a 'career that would guarantee me a good living income', I ended up choosing to study advertising. Through that I started a career as a graphic designer, and worked mostly at publishing design and photo retouching. Those times drawing was cornered to the hobby zone.

On early 2000's there were a lot of art modeling sessions for free at my city, and I always attended to a lot of them. Circa 2007 - 2008 I used to attend to those sessions about 3 or 4 times every week! But it still was a hobby.
(I used to post those drawings here)

Later, in 2009 and 2010, my drawing routine had an drastic fall and for several years I kept stagnant at the same level. These are from early 2011:

But it was in June/2011 that I finally decided to make a change to my life. I started studying art again, and this time focusing on one goal: becoming an illustrator.

At the beginning of 2013, after surprisingly seeing people talking good things and some saying how they loved my drawings, I realized how, just by changing my way of thinking, in 1.5 year I evolved more than I did in 5 years when dealt with drawing as a hobby:

And just for comparison, these are from January/2014:

Obviously these still are not at a professional level, but I guess it's easy to see how in 2013-2014 my art changed by far much more than 2007-2011.

Focusing on a goal, that's what makes the difference and brings results!
